나를 알면 길이 보여요(Trust Yourself and The Path Appears)

이 책은 현대 한국 불교의 큰 스승이셨던 대행큰스님이 1998년 11월 1일, 전국 연합 청년법회 때 설하신 법문을 영역하여 한글 원문과 합본으로 출간한 것이다.
앞으로 한국 사회를 짊어지고 나아갈 청년들이 스님의 법문을 듣기 위해 전국에서 모여들었다. 스님은 청년들이 과감하고 늠름하게 자신들의 삶을 이끌어 갈 수 있도록 마음공부의 핵심을 이렇게 일러주신다. “어떠한 일이 닥쳐온다 하더라도 눈 하나 깜짝 하지 않고 그냥 자기 근본, 주인공을 믿고 거기다 놓고 갈 수 있다면 그게 최고”라고. 스님의 가르침은 일견 매우 간결한 설명처럼 들리지만, 살면서 어떤 일이 다가오든 마음의 흔들림 없이 일체를 주인공에 일임할 수 있게 되기까지에는 대단한 마음의 힘이 요구될 터이다.
여기에 대행큰스님은 ‘어찌해서 우리는 자신의 근본을 완전히 믿을 수밖에 없는가 ’라는 질문을 던지며, 모든 일체 만물에 불성이 있다는 사실을 상기시킨다. 근본자리를 통해 만물만생이 하나로 연결되어 있으며, 그 자리를 믿고 일체를 거기에 놓고 가면, 꽃도 나무도 죽은 이들의 영혼까지도, 모두가 한마음으로 응신으로 화해 도움을 주게 되는 원리를 새삼 밝혀 주신 것이다.
우리들 근본마음의 작용은 묘하고도 깊은 뜻이 있으니, 믿고, 놓고, 관觀하여 모든 게 한마음으로 돌아가게 하는 과정을 반복하라. 그렇게 하면서 가다 보면 마음속에서 자기 근본, 참나인 주인공과 대화가 되고 그게 나를 가르쳐 주는 스승이 된다. 더 나아가서는 다른 사람을 도와줄 수도 있게 되니, 실로 마음 공부의 위대함은 말로 다 형용할 수 없다.
스님은 진주지원 영탑공원으로 가는 길을 만들어 준 여러 청년들의 정성스러운 마음을 기특하다 칭찬하시며, 열심히 마음 공부하는 청년들의 앞길이 트일 것이라고 마음을 내주시며 설법을 마치고 있다.

〈Book Contents〉
This is a Dharma talk given by Korean Seon Master Daehaeng on November 1, 1998 to the National Youth Group of Hanmaum Seon Center. They had gathered to share their experiences, and to greet Seon Master Daehaeng and receive her Dharma teachings.
Before taking individual questions, she started by emphasizing the omnipresent and all-embracing nature of what she calls “Buddha-nature” or “our fundamental mind.” Due to its all-embracing nature, if we can entrust it with whatever we are facing, both good and bad, then this will produce the best results.
However, while this is a very straightforward statement, it usually takes considerable experience to develop the faith to do this without blinking. So Seon Master Daehaeng emphasizes starting with the so-called small things, both pleasant and unpleasant that we are encountering in our daily life. For this daily life itself is an expression of the whole. Nothing we see, do, or experience exists apart from this, including what is called “fundamental mind,” “true nature,” or “Buddha-nature.” Thus, Seon Master Daehaeng says, the underlying aspect of our reality is that all beings are inherently sharing the same life, the same body, the same mind, working together as one, and freely giving and receiving whatever is needed. It is ignorance of this, and actions lacking this awareness, that lead to suffering.
Thus, Seon Master Daehaeng emphasizes, the path of spiritual growth begins, and ends, with trusting this indivisible whole that we are part of. By repeatedly trying to let go and entrust it with what we are experiencing, we will grow in understanding, faith, and spiritual depth.
Seon Master Daehaeng concludes by thanking the Youth Group for the work they have done, and discusses the nature of what she describes as “virtue and merit.”

대행큰스님은 여러 면에서 매우 보기 드문 선사禪師셨다. 무엇보다 선사라면 당연히 비구스님을 떠올리는 전통 속에서 여성으로서 선사가 되었으며, 비구스님들을 제자로 두었던 유일한 비구니 스님이었고, 노년층 여성이 주된 신도계층을 이루었던 한국 불교에 젊은 세대의 청장년층 남녀들을 대거 참여하게 만들어 한국불교에 새로운 풍격風格을 일으키는데 일조한 큰 스승이셨다. 또한 어느 누구나 마음수행을 통해 깨달을 수 있음을 강조하며 전통적인 수행 모델과는 달리 삭발제자와 유발제자를 가리지 않고 법을 구하는 이들에게는 모두 똑같이 가르침을 주셨고, 전통 비구니 강원과 비구니 종단에 대한 지속적인 지원을 펼치심으로써 비구니 승단을 발전시키는데 중추적인 역할을 하셨다.
대행큰스님은 1927년 서울에서 태어나 일찍이 9세경에 자성을 밝히시고, 일제 강점기와 6.25 전쟁을 거치면서 당신이 증득證得하신 바를 완성하기 위해 오랫동안 산중에서 수행하셨다. 1950년 대 말경, 치악산 상원사 근처에 있는 한 움막에 머무르시며 찾아오는 수많은 사람들의 고통스러운 호소를 들으시고 그들을 도와주셨다. 중생들이 가지고 오는 어떠한 문제도, 어떠한 어려운 상황도 해결이 되도록 도와주신 대행큰스님의 자비의 원력은 당시에 이미 한국에서는 전설이 되어 있었다. 스님은 자비를 물 마른 웅덩이에서 죽어가는 물고기를 살리는 방생에 비유하셨다. 그래서 집세가 없어 셋집에서 쫓겨난 사람들에게 집을 마련해 주고, 학비가 없어서 학교를 마칠 수 없는 학생들에게 학비를 대주셨지만, 스님의 자비행慈悲行을 아는 사람은 거의 없을 정도였다.
그러나, 문제를 해결해 주면 그때뿐 또 다른 문제가 닥쳐오면 속수무책이 되어 버리고 마는 사람들을 보며, 스님께서는 중생들이 자신들의 문제를 스스로 해결하고, 나아가 인과와 윤회의 굴레에서 벗어나 자유인이 될 수 있는 도리를 가르치는 것이 더 시급하다는 생각을 하게 되었다.
마침내 산에서 내려온 스님께서는 1972년 경기도 안양에 한마음선원을 설립하셨고, 이후 40여년 동안 한마음선원에 주석하시며, 크고 작은 법회에서 질문을 해오는 사람들에게 그들의 근기와 여건에 맞추어 답을 해 주시며 불법의 진리를 가르쳐 주셨다. 스님은 여러 다양한 사회복지 프로그램을 후원하셨고, 6개국에 9개의 국외 지원과 국내 15개의 지원을 세우셨다. 또한 스님의 가르침은 영어, 독어, 스페인어, 러시아어, 중국어, 일본어, 불어, 이태리어, 베트남어, 인도네시아어 등으로 번역 출간되었다. 스님은 2012년 5월 22일, 세납 86세로 입적하셨으며 법랍 63세셨다.

〈About Seon Master Daehaeng〉
Daehaeng Kun Sunim was a rare teacher in Korea: a female seon(zen) master, a nun who also taught monks, and a teacher who helped revitalize Korean Buddhism by dramatically increasing the participation of young people and men.
She made laypeople a particular focus of her efforts, and broke out of traditional models of spiritual practice to teach in such a way that anyone could practice and awaken. At the same time, she was a major force for the advancement of Bhikkunis (nuns), heavily supporting traditional nuns’ colleges, as well as the modern Bhikkuni council of Korea.
Born in Seoul, Korea, in 1927, she awakened when she was around eight years old, and spent the years afterwards learning to put her understanding into practice. For years, she wandered the mountains of Korea, wearing a ragged set of clothes and eating only what was at hand. Years later, she explained that she hadn’t been pursuing some type of asceticism; rather, she was just completely absorbed in entrusting everything to her fundamental Buddha essence, and observing how that affected what she entrusted.
This greatly affected her teaching style later, for she could clearly see the great potential, energy, and wisdom inherent within each of us, but saw that people suffered because they don’t know about this, and instead were looking outside of themselves. Clearly seeing the great light we each have, she taught people to rely upon this inherent foundation, and refused to teach anything that distracted people from that.
Her deep compassion made her a legend in Korea long before she formally started teaching people. She was known for having the spiritual power to help people in all circumstances and with every kind of problem. She compared compassion to freeing a fish from a drying puddle, putting a homeless family into a home, or providing the school fees that would allow a student to finish high school. And when she did things like this, and much more, few knew that she was behind it.
Daehaeng Kun Sunim clearly saw that for people to live freely and to go forward as a blessing to all around them, they needed to know about this bright essence within each of us. To help people discover this for themselves, she founded the first Hanmaum Seon Center in 1972. For the next forty years, she gave wisdom to those who needed wisdom, food and money to those who were poor and hungry, and compassion to those who were hurting. When she passed away on May 21, 2012, she had founded 24 centers in six countries around the world, and her teachings have been translated into ten languages.

파도가 치면 파도치는 대로, 잔잔하면 잔잔한 대로, 어떠한 일이 닥쳐온다 하더라도 눈 하나 깜짝 안 하고 자기 근본을 믿고 거기다 놓고 갈 수 있다면 그게 최고다!
Whether the waves are pounding on you, or the sea is calm, have faith in your foundation and keep entrusting it with everything that’s happening. Keep working at doing this, to the point where you can entrust everything without even blinking an eye. Being able to live like this is beyond anything you can imagine.

자기 삶을 과감하게 물러서지 않으면서도 늠름하게 이끌고 싶다면 자기가 자기를 못 믿으면 안돼요.
If you want to lead your life boldly and with dignity, without cringing away from things, you must believe in your true self.
